Dentures (also known as false teeth) are custom-made in a prosthodontics lab to fit an individual's mouth. They are available in whole and partial forms and can replace all or some missing teeth. The base or framework of complete or partial dentures is typically constructed of acrylic resin, nylon, porcelain, resin, or metal, while fake teeth are typically made of acrylic resin or porcelain. Partial dentures are supported by the remaining teeth and gums, whereas full or complete dentures are supported directly by the gums. Another alternative is implant-supported dentures, which are held in place by abutments (metal connectors) atop two to six implant posts screwed into the jaws. Implant-retained dentures can be removable (the snap-in variety) or permanent, whereas traditional complete dentures must always be removed at night.
